The rise of the National Living Wage to £12.71 by 2026 is justice for workers, and for many it will feel like that—a pay packet that stretches further, a week made less precarious. It’s recognition of dignity in labour. Yet for kitchens and cafés already pressed by rising energy bills and food inflation, it’s another cost they must shoulder. Owners want to pay fairly and keep their doors open. The numbers are brutal, yet they tell a human story. Every plate served carries the weight of policy, and behind it the effort to balance fairness with survival.
Business rates are lowered, permanently, for retail and hospitality. But the 40% discount vanishes, and the Chancellor swaps a lifeline for a new structure. The question is not whether businesses win or lose, but whether they can survive. Is this reform, or simply a recalibration that leaves businesses no better off?
The extension of the Sugar Tax to high-sugar milk drinks is welcome news. It connects economics to nutrition, industry to health. It nudges producers to innovate, to create drinks that nourish rather than deplete. This presents a chance to align food culture with public wellbeing.
Put together, this isn't abstract economics. It hits the kitchen table: it's the price of soup, or the daily, grinding decision to keep the lights on. For struggling households, relief and burden seem to arrive in the very same breath. And that’s the central question this Budget leaves us with: are we genuinely building a food sector that truly nourishes, or one that is simply left to survive?
