We live in a world where the sun never really sets.

Food no longer answers to daylight. Late-night deliveries and midnight fridge raids mean we can eat whenever we want — but our biology hasn’t caught up. Technology adapted instantly to a 24/7 world, but the human body didn’t. We just like to pretend it has.

This tension sits at the heart of how we eat today. Deep in the brain sits a tiny master clock - the suprachiasmatic nucleus - governing sleep, wakefulness, and digestion. Old health advice reduced nutrition to arithmetic: calories in, calories out. But the clock on the wall was never the only clock that mattered!

Metabolism follows a clear daily rhythm. Morning sunlight signals the stomach, liver, and pancreas to wake up, and carbohydrate processing and blood sugar regulation hit peak efficiency soon after — turning food into clean, usable energy with ease.

Darkness brings a complete shift in internal chemistry. As digestive activity slows, our biological ‘housekeeping’ takes over — the body prioritises cellular repair, rest, and lower inflammation over fuel consumption.

A heavy meal late in the evening disrupts this sequence, forcing resting organs back to work — the result is poor digestion, restless sleep, and morning sluggishness.

A circadian approach to food avoids extreme diets and macro counting. Working with your biology requires only three simple adjustments:

  • Eat with the sun — keep your eating window within 10 to 12 daytime hours. You could start breakfast at 7:30 am, close the kitchen by 7:30 pm, and let the night do its work uninterrupted.

  • Breakfast or lunch should be your biggest meal, timed to when metabolic efficiency peaks. Try to keep evening meals light and simple.

  • Dim the lights as that bright overhead kitchen light tells your brain it’s still daytime, holding melatonin back. Maybe swamp it for something warm and low to signal the end of the day.

Aligning meals with daylight makes life easier on our body. Reconnecting with these natural daily rituals reflects Our Founder's Vision for a more balanced life, and it’s part of a bigger picture — from policies like Equal Plates, Equal Potential down to our daily personal habits.

Your body already knows what to do with the dark. We’re the ones who keep interrupting.
