The Fuel on Your Plate

Every bite you take is a move on a global chessboard. We like to think of dinner as a private choice, but this week continues to prove otherwise. Conflict in the Middle East is now rippling through your kitchen. Food never exists in isolation. Politics dictates the menu and Economics prepares the dish.


The logic is simple: our broken food system is actually an oil system. When tensions rattle the energy markets, your grocery bill reacts instantly. It’s a straight line from the price of a barrel of crude to the price of a loaf of bread. Oil fuels the tractors and the ships—and it keeps the lights on in the giant warehouses that store our ‘fresh’ produce.

But the connection goes deeper than just transport. We are literally eating fossil fuels. Natural gas is the main ingredient in the nitrogen fertilisers that keep our industrial soil alive. Without that chemical shot in the arm, global crop yields would collapse by half.


This is why your grocery bill feels ‘sticky’. Even if the weather is good, the energy market is volatile. We are paying a ‘systemic tax’ for a food model that is incredibly efficient but dangerously brittle. It relies on everything being cheap. This system also dictates the type of food we see. Processed food is dry and dead. It’s also easy to ship and store. Fresh food is heavy and alive. It requires refrigeration and speed. When energy prices spike, the 'Perishability Tax' makes real food a luxury. The machine pushes us toward the ultra-processed because it’s easier for the logistics chain to handle.


The shelves in the supermarket look full, but they are fragile. We have traded resilience for convenience. Our dinner is a hostage to the oil pump.

Until we change how we move and grow our food, we are just another part of the ‘machine’ that wants you to eat alone. But true joy and resilience are found at a shared table.
