The City is Eating Us Alive

Care does not start in a doctor’s surgery. It is built into the way we live. We need time to eat well, space to gather, and freedom to breathe.
Yet, the modern city is eating us alive.
Think of Charlie Chaplin in Modern Times. He is a cog in a machine, tightening bolts until he loses his grip on reality. An automated feeder tries to force-feed him at his post. It is a violent, mechanical failure—and we are doing this to ourselves.
Our cities are designed for efficiency, not human biology. They force us to eat in isolation and on the move.

Our gut-brain axis connects our digestion to our mental state. It’s a silent sensor that monitors our environment. When we eat hastily, this axis destabilises. Our body interprets urban stress as a threat. The gut signals the brain to prepare for 'fight or flight' , diverts energy away from digestion and triggers systemic inflammation. We feel this as chronic exhaustion.
Marketing claims this is a ‘personal project’ and that counting calories or tracking steps will save us. You can’t really heal a body that the city keeps in a state of alert. Food and Urbanism identifies this problem perfectly: it challenges us to rethink how we build, how we live, and how we eat.
MoM exists to repair this damage by reclaiming the space and time to function as human beings again. We support urban structures that prioritise communal, stable nourishment.
A calmer metabolism requires a calmer, more deliberate city. By reclaiming how we eat, we rebuild our gut-brain axis and regain control of our health.
