Food is Healthcare

When we think about healthcare, we focus on doctors, nurses, and medicine. We rarely think about food. Yet, for Movimento Metropolitano (MoM), nutrition is an essential part of medical care.
We need to stop making nutrition sound like a complex scientific word—it’s not. It simply means the food we eat and how our bodies use it to stay strong. Certain foods are vital for healing, strength, and recovery and this vital information needs to reach people, giving more equal opportunities to understand what bodies need on their healing journey.
Did you know that malnutrition in European and UK hospitals is a major, hidden crisis?
Major health authorities—including the World Health Organization (WHO), the European Society for Clinical Nutrition and Metabolism (ESPEN), and the National Institute for Health and Care Excellence (NICE)—agree that good nutrition is crucial to maintaining health and recovery.
Nutritional care begins on day one. Many patients leave clinical settings physically weakened, with suppressed appetites and inadequate home food supplies. Surely true recovery should integrate pathways where hospitals, local authorities, and actual services coordinate proactively from admission to home. Yet, we are far from this reality.
Hospital food should nourish and be easy to eat. It is neither. What it should be is an integral pillar of the wider civic frameworks.
MoM believes we need a culture shift by treating food as a core part of healthcare.
